Well, yes. This IS America.

1970 attack on unarmed student protesters at Kent State University
Police action at peaceful UC Davis Occupy protest
Let’s not pretend like the police actions taken this week are anything new. It’s just the most recent manifestation of a problem America has had for a very long time.
August 3, 1939
In an effort to set a world record, Joe Sprinz, catcher for the Pacific Coast League’s San Francisco Seals, attempts to catch a baseball dropped from the Goodyear Blimp hovering 800 feet above. After Sprinz misses the first four dropped balls, the fifth ball strikes his mitt at an estimated 154 miles per hour, driving the mitt into his face. Sprinz fractures his upper jaw in 12 places, has five teeth knocked out, suffers lacerations to both upper and lower lips, breaks his nose and is knocked out cold. There is still debate as to whether he managed to hold on to the ball.
